cover-smallThere’s a plethora of visual delights packed into the 162 pages of this years Applied Arts Photography & Illustration Awards issue, and selected works aside, that ChorusArt Silk 80lb paper combined with Mi5′s UV Pro-Brite printing process sure is a sexy sight. But enough about pretty paper, time to get into them pages, where a good showing from a number of Westsiders is what you’ll find.

Kicking off with Chris Gordaneer, who received top marks in two categories this year with his Trials motorcycle series, as well as some unseen panoramics from his most recent trip to Africa.

      NEWS | #BOSTONSTRONG TORONTO

by Matt on April 30, 2013

Despite taking place last Monday, the following bit of Westside news is a morsel that several Torontonians will surely savour for a lifetime.

Following the events that occurred at the Boston Marathon, a blogger by the name of PavementRunner put out a call to runners worldwide, asking any and all to join in running #BOSTONSTRONG on April 22nd, one week following the Boston race. Producer extrordinare Phaedra Kennedy – having completed the marathon with a time of 3:16:02 – was quick to answer the calling and immediately began organizing #BostonStrong Toronto: West End Edition.

      PK_BostonTO

I’m proud to say that we had over 50 runners show up and almost every single one of them was wearing blue and yellow. We even had our own cheering section with cowbells. I met a whole bunch of new people, finally got to hug everyone in my run group and did my first run since Boston. My legs may have been heavy but my heart was light. It was such a wonderful experience and I’m thankful to everyone that came out to show their support. Love you all! xo ~ P

Long time friends of the Blog may recall a tattooed Associate Creative Director who’s really into Birding and was on a 365 day quest to not only see as many different species of bird as possible, but also to document the entire process of his big year. An already hefty undertaking for a Associate Creative Director at a major advertising firm, our bird loving Gilgamesh then pushed his project to the limit, deciding to permanently inscribe the binomial name of each found species on himself when the year was complete. Ladies and Gents, please reacquaint yourselves with Mr. Paul Riss.

Throughout his journey, Paul was fortunate to have the support of many different people willing to follow him into the wilderness in search of another tattoo. Bringing a Westside presence to the project, both Chris Gordaneer and Derek Shapton found themselves in Paul’s tow, behind the lens of what will become PUNK ROCK BIG YEAR.

While time has run out on Paul’s ‘big year’, the work on PRBY is far from finished. Now entering the post-production phase, Paul and producer Marie-Pierre Toure are in the process of putting together his dream of getting,

… a younger generation to understand that there are birders out there just like them and they should check out this most incredible pastime. Also, to make people aware of how fragile and important birds are to our natural environment.

In an effort to keep his real world children’s college funds in tact, Mr. Riss has started a IndieGoGo campaign in hopes of garnering further support for his unfinished baby. There are some awesome donation perks availible, ranging from a digital pat on the back ($10), to a physical copy of the completed film ($50), all the way up to being able to tattoo your name or brand on Paul ($5,000 – no joke!).

So whether your a Birder, an independent film fan, or just enjoy Paul’s work, if you got an extra buck why not get yourself a digital pat on the back, you’ll sleep better at night knowing you helped a man fulfill his dream.

Just in case the above links weren’t obvious, CLICK HERE to check out the other perks offered on the PUNK ROCK BIG YEAR Indiegogo page.

            NEWS | THREE LUCK-Y BOYS

by Matt on October 15, 2012

The 2012 Advertising & Interactive Awards Annual from Applied Arts has been sitting on my desk for a couple days now and so what better way to kick off the week than with some NEWS!

Three Westsiders found themselves within the pages of this years annual, all thanks to awesome clients, fabulous agencies, and some really fun projects.

Don’t forget you can click on any of the images below to get the full low-down on the work. Now lets open ‘er up and find out who’s rounding out this trifecta.

First up is Chris Gordaneer and BBDO Toronto’s infamous Mer-Cow and Pig Family for GE Profile Ovens. The Mer-Cow snagged some recognition in the Young Blood Advertising category for Single Print, as well for Point-of-Purchase/In-Store Ad or Promotion (Single). Chris’ family of pigs found some love as well with hugs in Point-of-Purchase/In-Store Ad or Promotion (Series).

HUGE shout outs to Art Directors Mike Donaghey and Jonathan Guy, who’s work with Chris received top marks for Art Direction (Series).

Next in the annual is Andrew B. MyersRemember image. Shot with DDB for Historica-Dominion, the Remembrance Day campaign was awarded several times including: Newspaper (Single), Public Service/Charity (Single), and Experiential/Event (Single).

We close this years Advertising Annual with a visit to Planet Shapton – home to a man by the name of Derek – who found two enormous projects awarded in various categories. His Keep Exploring campaign with DDB Vancouver for Canada Tourism was recognized for Complete Advertising Program (Complete) under the Broadcast TV section, and for Online Campaign in the Interactive section.

Keeping us in the Interactive section is Derek and Taxi 2′s Gigashelf. If you haven’t seen the work before you should definitely click through and check it out because it was surely deserving of love from both the Consumer Products and Mobile Apps categories.

A big congrats to all the teams at BBDO, DDB, and Taxi 2 on their awarded works, and word to all our winning photographers mothers (we, like they, are very proud of them on their achievements).

              NEWS | SHANGHOON’S SHURIKEN

by Matt on October 2, 2012

When Derek Shapton put together his tissue box last spring – whether it was intentional or not – he set a new creative bar for his fellow shooters looking to do promotional mailers of their own. Fortunately creativity is something we stock in abundance here at Westside, as we saw two weeks ago when the Ormerod Soda Company stopped by with samples of their latest flavors.

Today we continue our pilgrimage of promotion as we journey eastward, to the far reaches of Studio B, home to one of the fiercest members of the W clan, Shanghoon. Legend states he was born with a Hasselblad system for a left hand and possesses the ability to manipulate sunlight to suit whatever his setup might require. Known to many as ‘The Beverage Bushido’, this Westside Warrior is presently on a mission to remind advertising agencies that he is omnipresent in the realm of photography and should they be in need of his service, he is there for them… always.

You may have noticed Shanghoon‘s star tearing through that banana above – causing its inner flesh to explode throughout the frame – well it wasn’t just Mr. Chiquita to feel the wrath of ‘Hoon, others too fell by way of his star.

Now before anyone throws up their arms and starts referencing the Good Times With Weapons episode of South Park, Shanghoon is not handing out ninja stars so you can dole out justice to the person leaving dirty dishes in the sink. Fear not kitchen perpetrator, these S marked shuriken are actually sweet office tacks so you can ensure your important list doesn’t leave your cubicle wall (or dart board).

So keep your eyes peeled agency folk, you may find your mailbox has been visited by ‘The Photo Shinobi’.

                NEWS| THE BURG OF ORMEROD

by Matt on September 20, 2012

If your a creative type at an agency in Toronto, you may have found yourself a little present on your desk this week, as the Ormerod Soda Company was out on the town dropping off Nikki’s new promo.

Here’s the lady herself to tell you all about her new flavors.

I initially approached the guys over at Breadwinner about designing a cool label for my promotional Soda bottles. They were super stoked to sink their teeth into this project and make it bigger and waaay better than what I had originally planned. They came up with the concept of making ORMEROD, a town in itself which totally fit the style of the photography I shot for this promo. We agreed to add some cool elements to the soda bottle too (if you take a second to read the text on the bottle it’s pretty awesome). Coasters and a website made this idea more interesting and layered so we got Adam from Transmitter Studios on board to design the website and he obviously did an amazing job.

So huge shout out to all the great creatives who made my promo cool as heck. So, with that being said…

Welcome to the burg of Ormerod, please enjoy and have a look around – or in others words –
                HEY LOOK AT ME EVERYONE!

                ~N

Nikki’s coasters, which when seen from the animated side, create a nice little landscape of Nikki’s township.

Give the label a click if your interested in learning the nutritional value of a fine fizz such as those made by the OSC.

Now click below and go take a walk through the lovely burg of ORMEROD.

In Memory of Gian Carlo Drueco

by Shelley on August 22, 2012

Today’s post is in memory of an incredible young photographer Gian Carlo Drueco. The world lost a beautiful person and photographer. My heart goes out to his girlfriend, friends, and family.

In his honour, here are some lovely words from his close friends, along side some of his stunning images.

Gian was my friend. He was honest, humble and talented as hell. I was truly lucky I could consider him a close friend. I know he was genuinely touched by the outpouring of love and support from an industry that he was so new to and from people that didn’t even know him. If I have learned anything from Gian and our friendship, it is to embrace every opportunity, to stay positive and to live life like you fucking mean it. My life was better for having known him and I miss him more than I thought I could.

                    - Helen Yousif

I met Gian when we were both just starting our journey in photography at Sheridan College 7 years ago, but I feel like I’ve known him for much longer than that. He was the first person to talk to me on the first day of class and even went out of his way to introduce himself as I was fumbling in my locker. That was very indicative of the way Gian was: friendly beyond words, eager to meet strangers, longing to make people feel welcome. And of those people he met, he would almost instantly become a meaningful part of their lives. Since then, he had grown into one of my dearest friends and someone who I admired both on a personal level and on an artistic one. Many of you only know Gian through his photography, but it was something he put so much of his thought and emotion into, you’ve no doubt at least got a sense of some part of him. His photographs drip with atmosphere; something I strive for, but have never been able grab a hold of the way Gian did. He was always looking for that new way of doing things; a new intangible that would set his work apart and it showed. It’s not often you can say that one of your closest friends is also one of your favourite artists in your field. I don’t think I ever said that to him; I hope he knew. With such a deep well of talent and a genuine excitement for the stuff around him, he was destined for big things. It would only be a matter of time before his break came along and his career blew up. I wish he had a chance to experience that. He deserved to have that chance. I hate that he didn’t.

For those that didn’t know him personally, he leaves behind a painfully gorgeous body of work. Work that I hope continues to find a new audience. For those of us that did know him, he leaves behind much more than that; he’s left us with a lifetime’s worth of genuine friendship, countless memories of great times spent together, more positivity than could possibly fit into one human being, stories of his truly unique sense of humour (not to mention a closet full of deep v t-shirts), … the list goes on. While we’ll never be able to fill the hole he leaves, we can count ourselves lucky in having those experiences to forever keep with us. His afterglow will last until long after we all make our departures too.

When I look back through the work he left behind, I’m overwhelmed with the sadness that we’ll never see what else he had in store; that I’ll never again get to watch the happiness that making photographs brought to him; that we’ll never get to share another drink and bat around new ideas and dream about the future. But more than any of that, I’ll simply miss my friend.

Gian, you meant more to me than I’m afraid you ever knew. Love ya, man.

                    - Gary Ogle

On Saturday August 25th a memorial will be held in Gian’s honour. Please click here for more details.
